A CLÉI piece begins with its material.
Before the first collection took shape, there was a question, what should a bag be made from today?
The search began with the material, not the design. Its answer shaped everything that followed.
OUTER MATERIAL
CLÉI works with next-generation plant leather derived from agricultural waste and plant-based inputs. Soft, lightweight and made to endure, it gives each design its structure, movement and feel.
A material has to feel natural in the hand. Hold a clean edge. Move with the form. It must meet the demands of everyday use without losing what first drew us to it.
Before entering a collection, every material moves through sampling, prototyping and daily use. It is carried, filled and handled as it will be in life. Only then can it become part of a CLÉI piece.
Some materials never make it further. If one falls short in feel, performance or longevity, it does not move forward. By the time a piece reaches you, its material has already proven that it belongs.
Longevity is not measured only in years. It is found in how often a piece is reached for, how naturally it becomes part of the everyday and how personal it grows with time.
In India, the objects that endure often move from one life into another. They are cared for, shared and passed on. CLÉI carries this understanding forward in pieces intended to be lived with, cherished and enjoyed for years to come.
The principle remains simple: The Right Material is worth the search.
LINING
The inside deserves as much attention as the outside.
A lining does more than complete a piece. It shapes how the interior feels, how the form moves, how it wears over time and how it protects what is carried within.
CLÉI works with two types of lining, each selected according to the character and needs of the design.
MICROFIBRE SUEDE
Many CLÉI pieces are lined in microfibre suede made with recycled polyester. Soft to the touch, lightweight and resilient, it brings warmth to the interior while meeting the demands of everyday use.
Chosen for its durability as much as its feel, it is designed to move and age alongside the piece.
COTTON LINING
Selected designs feature certified cotton linings sourced in India. Cotton brings structure, durability and a natural quality to the interior, complementing the form without drawing attention away from it.
The inside is never an afterthought. It is part of how a piece is experienced each time it is opened.
HARDWARE
The details that give a piece its character.
Every clasp, ring, zip pull and fitting contributes to how a piece looks, feels and functions over time.
CLÉI uses brass and zinc alloy hardware with nickel-free finishes, chosen for durability and tested for finish retention, corrosion resistance and everyday wear.
Substantial in the hand and smooth in use, each element sits naturally within the design while performing the purpose for which it was made.
PACKAGING
A CLÉI bag arrives with the same consideration with which it was made.
Each one is accompanied by a structured bag shaper and cotton dust bag, created to help protect the piece and preserve its form.
The shaper is made from GRS-certified herringbone cotton and filled with recycled polyfill. The wrapping, presentation box and shipping materials are made from recycled materials in CLÉI’s signature chocolate and malt colours.
The packaging protects a piece on its way to you, then continues to care for it through the life that follows.
